The lifeless American Economy has regained a heartbeat, although it may be an irregular one or even just a murmur. But hey, it’s something right? The last week of November brought about a jump in the Dow Jones, NASDAQ, and Standard & Poor 500 indexes. We finally have a spike on the Economic EKG monitor again. The Dow Jones experienced its biggest gain since March of 2009, soaring 490 points on November 30th. For the week, the Dow is up 7.3%, the S&P 500 is up 7.6% and the NASDAQ is up 7.3%.

Those numbers are the spike you see on the EKG monitor. So what was the defibrillator? A few things combined to charge the pads and spark the American Economy to life.

The first, Black Friday, which is ironic because it sounds like it should be the translation for the end of the world as predicted by the Mayans. Black Friday saw an increase in shoppers by 6.6% and the average spending per shopper rose 9.1%, consequently bumping retail stocks up 3.5% in the S&P 500 Retail Index.

Second, holiday travel. The nation saw a 4% increase in the number of Americans making a trip of 50 miles or more for Thanksgiving weekend, which is the biggest increase since 2008. Despite increases in average gas prices, roundtrip airfare, and hotel room rates as compared to last year’s Thanksgiving, more Americans are still hitting the road to visit their loved ones for the holidays. Still think we are lazy Obama? (AND THE SURVEY SAYS: 60% of Occupiers of Wall Street in New York voted for Obama in 2008…hmmm)

Lastly, the American people cranked their engines to give the Automotive Industry their best sales month in over two years. American Automakers such as Ford, GM and Chrysler all saw significant increases in sales which most likely came from the offering of more attractive lease contracts, more incentives (in dollars) per vehicle, and a release of new vehicle lines.

As for us at Webb Transportation, we also saw a little boost as we had a 8% increase in sales as compared to last November! Keep fighting fellow Americans, from farm towns to big cities. Even baby steps will get us there eventually.

The Topsfield Fair, that venerable New England tradition for the whole family, begins again on September 30th, running through October 10th.

The colorful and educational fair provides a wide range of unique entertainment including racing pigs, a Bengal tiger, a kiddie koral, duck races, maple sugar making, and more. The legendary midway and rides are always family favorites. This year the fair also features musical performances from Mike Posner, Allstar Weekend, Phil Vassar, Joey & Rory, Kid Fiddlers, North Sea Gas, Ayla Brown, Sean Kingston, and Randy Houser.

The Topsfield Fair began in 1818 when the Essex Agricultural Society, the non-profit organization that owns the Topsfield Fair, was granted a charter on June 12th of that year. The goal of the fledgling Society, formed by a group of “practical farmers” who first met on February 16, 1818, was “to promote and improve the agricultural interests of farmers and others in Essex County.”

Today, the Society still strives “to encourage, promote and preserve Essex County agricultural activities and to educate the general public regarding their importance in an atmosphere of fun and excitement through the medium of the Topsfield Fair.”

What began as the Essex Agricultural Society Cattle Show with its annual exhibits and fairs held in various sites around Essex County to showcase agriculture, Topsfield Fair has been held annually at its existing location since 1910. It is fitting that the fair eventually settled in Topsfield, for it was at the town’s former Cyrus Cummings Tavern that twenty or more men first gathered that February in 1818 to form what soon became the Essex Agricultural Society.

General admission to the fair is $10 on September 30th and October 3rd through the 6th. All other days, general admission is $12. For detailed information on this year’s fair including discounted ticket sales, visit their website at: www.topsfieldfair.org.

Of course, as much fun as the fair has proven over the years, it has a definite impact on traffic in the surrounding area. Route 1 travelers should expect delays when traveling near the fairgrounds. Of course, you can avoid the hassle of driving altogether by letting Webb Transportation drop you off and pick you up at the fairgrounds. Groups of up to 25 fair goers might want to consider letting Webb Transportation do the driving to avoid parking issues and to enhance their enjoyment of the fair experience. For more information, simply call: 978.750.6666 or visit our website at: www.webbtrans.com.

If you travel regularly on 93 North of Boston then you have probably been caught in the traffic delays caused by the 98.1 million dollar construction project currently under way. Construction will continue -on weekends- through August of 2011.

On Friday nights from 8pm until 5am, six miles of 93 North will close from Sullivan Square in Somerville all the way to Montvale Ave in Stoneham. The northbound traffic will be moved across the medium and will occupy two of the southbound lands with a zippered median. This means if you are heading southbound into Boston, traffic will be reduced to two lanes, with a closed HOV lane.

In the unlikely event that everything goes according to plan (see Big Dig) then the construction on the northbound side should be done in early July, at which time construction will switch to the southbound side.

The construction will also close off the ramps for Exit 32 (Route 60) and Exit 33 (Roosevelt Circle). The on ramps for these exits will remain open. No southbound exits will be closed during northbound construction.

The Custom House Maritime Museum just keeps growing.

Volunteers are spending their time setting up the facility for the season’s opening on Wednesday — one that will include an ambitious slate of programs and exhibits, as well as inaugural joint efforts between the museum and other organizations.

It’s a far cry from a few years ago when the museum was forced to close its doors for a period to tend to the aftermath of the Mother’s Day storms in 2006.

Since it reopened the following year, museum volunteers have worked in full force to expand the role of the Custom House in the city.

This year is no exception.

The Custom House Maritime Museum boasts, “Your Gateway to Maritime History in the Marrimack Valley. The Custom House was built in 1835 to facilitate growing overseas trade and tax collection of imported goods on the waterfront.

As Newburyport’s commercial seaport industry declined, the Custom House was used for other things such as manufacturing women’s shoe heels and submarine parts. The Newburyport Maritime Society was founded in 1968 and now oversees the Custom House as a museum.

May 18 – June 30 is the inaugural exhibition of their 2011 season and this year they are featuring an exhibit called “Clarissa: Before Her Time” which heralds the story of the women in the Coast Guard during WWII. There will be uniforms, possessions and keepsakes from the officers.

Newburyport was chosen especially to house this exhibit because of the fact that that the U.S. Coast Guard was started in Newburyport. Admission is $7.00 for Adults and $5.00 for Seniors and Children.

Newburyport has much to offer in the way of bars, restaurants and music. It is a great place to have a night out. If you are planning a night out let Webb Transportation get you there in style.
City set to greet 23 ships

By Francis X. Quinn
Staff Writer

Tourism promoters say Gloucester expects this year to at least double the number of cruise ship visits that have marked a good season in the past.

Cape Ann Chamber of Commerce chief Bob Hastings said Wednesday that 2011 bookings have reached 23 so far, “and we anticipate more.”

The potential economic impact on the city and its shop owners and restaurateurs is a positive feature not lost on those tracking the dollars-and-cents aspects of being a high-end destination for vacationers.

But there are intangibles, too, Hastings noted.

“It basically tells the world you’ve arrived,” Hastings says. “You’re a place worth visiting.”

First in port is expected to be the Holland America Maasdam for a day-long stop on April 28.

That visit will precede a string of smaller American Cruise Line arrivals clustered in mid-summer.

Later in the season more big ships are scheduled to come in carrying thousands of passengers drawn in large part by the promise of premier New England foliage. Read the rest of this article here.

This is very good news for the city of Gloucester and all of Cape Ann. These cruises bring tourists who spend on average of $300 when they come to port. Of the 23 ships coming to Gloucester this year booked so far, they vary in size. There are smaller cruise ships that hold just 149 passengers up to 936 footers with 11 decks that hold 2,100 passengers.

The Cruise-port at Gloucester seems to be growing at a rapid pace. In 2009, just three cruises came into port. In 2010, it went up to 10, and now in 2011 it is at least up to 23. This bodes well for small businesses, boutiques and restaurants in Gloucester and the surrounding communities. Some locals may not like the idea of Gloucester becoming a bustling tourist destination, but there is no doubt the money it brings in is good for the city.

John Webb, President and CEO of Webb Transportation Services, LLC announced today that March 2011 was the best month in the company’s history. Most notably this led to the best quarter Webb Transportation has ever experienced. This is no easy task in the Boston Limousine market that is home to three of the largest transportation companies in the country. Not to mention the economic pressures that all small business are facing.

When asked what he attributes the success to, Mr. Webb stated: “The day I started, one of my goals was to assemble the best team in the industry. Bernie Rotundo, Partner and VP of Operations, has done an unbelievable job hiring a fantastic team of drivers. He is constantly working with them to ensure a high level of customer service. Our marketing & sales team is just knocking it out of the park every month. And, I can’t say enough about the team in the shop, the cars are spotless and ready to go no matter what hour of the day. It all adds up to a customer experience that is well received and generating tremendous repeat and referral business.”

Webb was very optimistic as he discussed the rest of 2011. “Our first quarter is typically our worst. I don’t think that is going to change. In fact I believe we have a game plan that, well executed, will significantly improve the 31% average annual growth rate we have experienced the past six years. Plus we are launching “Coastal Visits” a tour business focused on the thousands of visitors who are interested in the Greater Boston, North Shore, and Cape Ann coastal sights.” Stay tuned!
